Perhaps you've heard of bedouins. They're sojourners moving from place to place, never settling permanently. Sojourners live away from their true home. They're constantly on the move, never staying long.
Whether we know it or not, we are all sojourners. Now, you may be thinking, "I've lived in the same house in the same town in the same country all my life. How can I be a sojourner?"
Well, the answer is simple. As Christians, we are all sojourners in this world. This earth is not our home. Our home is in heaven, with our Lord.
God's faithful chosen understood that. Many of them were sojourners themselves. Think of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Ruth, Naomi, and Esther. Scripture is full of examples. These are just a few.
"By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out unto a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he became a sojourner in the land of promise" -Hebrews 11:8-9
As an MK (missionary kid), I am priveliged to understand well how this works. We've lived overseas most of my life and moved countless times. The longest we've lived in a single home is almost six years, but as I write this, we've moved once again.
Yes, I can say I understand the meaning of the word sojourn. But what does sojourn really mean for us?
As Christians, we are sojourners in this world. It is not our true home. We should be careful not to let it become such. We ought to look ahead to when we can live in our true home, in heaven, with our Father.
"For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to His name." -Hebrews 13: 14-15
This is what our motto for life as sojourners should be. So try to remember that this world is not your home, and focus on your true home, the kingdom of heaven.
